Tax Withholding Estimator
If you’re an employee, the IRS Tax Withholding Estimator helps you decide whether to give your employer a new Form W-4, so you don’t have too much or too little federal income tax withheld from your pay.
Who benefits most
- Employees who want to change their withholding to get a smaller refund or avoid a balance due.
- Anyone with more than one job, or couples where both spouses work.
- Those filing as head of household, or with several children eligible for the Child Tax Credit.
- Employees with non-wage income who would rather have tax withheld from their paychecks than make quarterly estimated payments.
Before you start
- Have your most recent pay stubs handy.
- Have your most recent income tax return handy.
- Estimate values if you need to — the results are only as accurate as the information you enter.
Not sure how to fill out your W-4? We’re happy to help.
